Caroline Wozniacki, the renowned Danish tennis player and winner of the 2018 Australian Open, has sent shockwaves through the tennis world with her announcement of a surprising comeback to the sport. Three years after her retirement, Wozniacki revealed her decision to return to professional tennis on Thursday, June 29, setting her sights on the highly anticipated US Open in 2023.

The 32-year-old athlete left fans stunned when she announced her retirement following her appearance at the 2020 Australian Open, where she was defeated in the round of 32 by the current World No. 6, Ons Jabeur. Wozniacki had an illustrious career, dominating the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings from 2009 to 2011 and holding the prestigious title of World No. 1 for an impressive 71 weeks.

One of her notable accomplishments includes becoming the first Danish tennis player to secure a Grand Slam singles title by winning the Australian Open in 2018. Throughout her career, Wozniacki reached the finals of the US Open twice, in 2009 and 2014, and amassed an impressive collection of 30 WTA singles titles.

However, at the age of 29, Wozniacki decided to step away from the sport to focus on starting a family with her husband, former NBA player David Lee. Now a proud mother of two, Wozniacki is ready to reignite her tennis career. She plans to participate in the Montreal Open as her first step towards regaining match fitness, with her ultimate goal set on the US Open.

In a heartfelt post on Twitter, Wozniacki expressed her desire to showcase to her children that age and circumstances should never hinder the pursuit of one’s dreams. She wrote, “Over these past three years away from the game, I got to make up for lost time with my family. I became a mother and now have two beautiful children I am so grateful for. But I still have goals I want to accomplish. I want to show my kids that you can pursue your dreams no matter your age or role. We decided as a family it’s time. I’m coming back to play, and I can’t wait!”

In an article for Vogue magazine, Wozniacki further elaborated on her comeback plans. She expressed her excitement about the electric atmosphere in New York, stating, “So I’m going to play the US Open. There’s just an electric atmosphere in New York that I can’t get enough of, and I’ve played so well there for years and years.” Additionally, Wozniacki revealed her intentions to prepare for the Australian Open following the US Open and expressed her aspiration to compete in the Paris Olympics.
